An update from Pastor Bruce and Shirley

We have now started working with Africa For Christ in mentoring Xhosa pastors who are planting churches. God has led us into this work in a number ways. One Scripture that was particularly influential was Isaiah 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.” Although this is a prophecy about Christ, it came to us in a devotionally reading at exactly the time we needed to make a decision. In only a month we have become more and more aware of the enormous need here in South Africa. Although churches are springing up throughout the country, it is of concern because pastors and leaders often lack sufficient biblical training and leadership skills. We therefore feel that being part of Africa For Christ is where we belong at this point in time. Bruce has met with leaders of the mission and has already been in touch with a potential trainee who will need mentoring. Yesterday we attended an awards ceremony for organisations working with the poor. It was wonderful to see that churches are behind this initiative. It also make us realise that the local church can make a big impact on society. Our purpose statement says “Africa for Christ exists to see healthy churches established among the most needy peoples of the African continent.” Many churches, with which we will be involved, have Day Care centres that need guidance in preparing children for school. They lack training and equipment. Shirley will be involved in this area.

Although Shirley and I are on “pension” we are incurring added expenses in our ministry with AFC and would appreciate your support. This should not go directly to us but to AFC and should be marked for our ministry. Above all, however, we would appreciate your prayer support for:

  • Building a relationship of trust with the church planters and Day Care Centre  Leaders
  • Travelling in remote areas and on dangerous roads
  • Personal health and safety

Warmly,

Bruce and Shirley

Let us be remembering in prayer, Pastor Bruce and Shirley back in South Africa as they settle in to their new ministry with Africa For Christ. Join us this coming Sunday as we consider together with Pastor Will the nature of God`s Strange Choices from the life of David, the Lord`s Beloved as recorded in 1 Samuel 16.
